Mould King 27062S BMW M1 — The Only Mid-Engine BMW Ever Made, 411 Pieces
In 1978, BMW did something it has never done before or since: built a mid-engine supercar. The M1 was supposed to be a racing homologation special — 453 were built, and the project created BMW's legendary M Division in the process. This 411-piece model pays tribute to one of the rarest and most historically significant BMWs ever produced.
The Real Machine
The M1's 3.5-liter M88 inline-six sat behind the driver in a tubular space-frame chassis, producing 273 hp through a 5-speed ZF manual. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro — the man behind the DeLorean and the original VW Golf — the fiberglass body was a masterclass in 1970s wedge design. Only 453 were built between 1978 and 1981: 399 road cars and 54 racing variants. The M1 spawned the famous Procar Championship, where F1 drivers raced identical M1s before Grand Prix weekends, and it competed at Le Mans from 1981 to 1986. More importantly, the M1 project established BMW Motorsport GmbH — the M Division — which went on to create the M3, M5, and every M car since. Without the M1, there would be no M badge.
Design & Build
At 411 pieces, this build captures the M1's iconic wedge profile, Giugiaro's clean lines, and the distinctive BMW kidney grilles adapted for a mid-engine layout. The model features working steering and the classic BMW Motorsport livery details. A stackable display case is included for presentation.
What Builders Love
- Historical significance — This is THE car that created the M Division; it's automotive history in brick form
- Giugiaro design — The clean wedge shape is instantly recognizable and beautifully proportioned
- Rare subject — Very few brick sets honor the M1; this fills a genuine collector gap
- Display case included — Stackable case adds shelf presentation value
Worth Considering
- Niche recognition — Many casual car fans don't know the M1; it's a deep-cut choice
- Compact scale — The mid-engine proportions are simplified at this piece count
- Static only — No motorization or complex mechanical features

The Bottom Line
The M1 is the car that shouldn't exist — a mid-engine BMW born from a troubled development program that accidentally created the most iconic performance division in automotive history. At 411 pieces, this build is a compact tribute to a car that changed BMW forever. If you know why the M badge matters, you know why this set belongs in your collection.
